Hi everyone! We had to make the tough decision to have our 17 year old cat’s hind leg amputated due to a fibrosarcoma.
The 1st tumour on his hind leg came up so quickly and we rushed him to the vet to see what it was. Sadly the results came back positive for a fibrosarcoma, malignant.
So he had surgery 6 weeks ago to try and remove the tumour. Unfortunately the vet could not get clear margins but said it may take a long time before it grows back again.
Alas, that was not the case, and after 4 weeks post op, it appeared again.
He had surgery on the 16th December, thanks goodness, came through the anaesthetic and is home.
He is having some issues with trying to use his litter tray and finding balance.
He is eating, drinking, grooming and seeing.
He is on lots of painkillers which appear to be keeping him comfortable.
We have bought him an orthopaedic mattress to help with his body laying in one position.
We have lots of training pads scattered over the floor in case of any accidents and to avoid slipping.
We would never have put him through this, at his age, without the vet assuring us that he was very very healthy for his age.
They did blood work and xrays pre op and then went ahead with the surgery once that was all clear.
We are still feeling a world of different emotions but we, along with the vets, believed this was his best chance of having a quality, longer life.
I will keep you all posted.
Please, please, pass on any tips, tricks etc to help us all get through these nest few weeks.
